MSFFP2007
Identify materials used in furnishing production

Application

This unit specifies the competency required to identify materials and their properties used in production of furnishing goods.

It is designed for use in a pre-employment skills introduction program and is suitable for use in institutional-based vocational programs. Skills development will take place under direct supervision.

This unit is not to be used in a traineeship or apprenticeship training program or associated qualifications. It is only to be used in pre-employment programs and carries no credit towards apprenticeship/trade and other qualification types in manufacturing and furnishings.

No licensing, legislative or certification requirements apply to this unit at the time of publication.

Elements and Performance Criteria

Elements describe the essential outcomes.

Performance criteria describe the performance needed to demonstrate achievement of the element.

1

Identify materials used in furnishing production

1.1

Research and identify types and sources of materials used in making of furniture and furnishings

1.2

Identify characteristics of materials and describe advantages of those materials to each other

1.3

Identify generic and trade names for materials

1.4

Identify the workplace, health and safety (WHS) considerations for materials used in furniture production

2

Determine uses of materials for production of furnishing goods

2.1

Determine uses of materials for furniture production

2.2

Determine handling and care requirements for furniture materials

2.3

Identify the types of common problems and faults of materials

3

Determine performance of materials used in furnishing production

3.1

Determine physical properties of materials

3.2

Identify and describe performance characteristics of materials

3.3

Interpret types of surface finishes used on materials

4

Identify common faults, problems and surface defects of materials

4.1

Identify common faults, problems and surface defects of materials

4.2

Interpret possible causes for common faults, problems and surface defects

4.3

Identify workplace quality practices relating to faults, problems and surface defects

Evidence of Performance

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include:

following work instructions, procedures and safe work practices

identifying and interpreting project sheets, specifications, drawings and other relevant information in identifying a range of materials used in furniture production

identifying a minimum of three (3) different types of material used within the furnishing industry, including their characteristics, physical properties and performance characteristics

identifying common faults, problems and surface defects of materials

maintaining accurate records.

Evidence of Knowledge

Evidence required to demonstrate the required knowledge for this unit must be relevant to and satisfy the requirements of the elements and performance criteria and include knowledge of:

safe work practices and procedures and use of PPE

generic and common trade names of materials used in furniture production

handling procedures for materials

material characteristics on a range of materials

performance characteristics

common faults, problems and defects

quality standards and practices

safety and environmental aspects of relevant production and assembly processes

relevant federal and state or territory legislative or regulatory requirements

recording and reporting procedures.

Assessment Conditions

Assessors must:

satisfy the assessor competency requirements that are in place at the time of the assessment as set by the VET regulator

have vocational competency in identifying materials used in furniture production, at least to the level being assessed, with relevant industry knowledge and experience

Assessment must occur in a sufficiently rigorous simulated environment that reflects realistic workplace situations.

Conditions for assessment must include access to all tools, equipment, materials and documentation required, including relevant procedures, product and manufacturing specifications associated with this unit.

Assessment processes and techniques must be appropriate to the language, literacy and numeracy requirements of the work being performed and the needs of the candidate.

Foundation Skills

This section describes those required skills (reading, writing, oral communication and numeracy) that are essential to workplace performance in this unit of competency.

Foundation skills essential to performance are explicit in the performance criteria of this unit of competency.
